Student wellbeing
Like all NSW public schools, at The Meadows Public School we provide safe learning and teaching environments to encourage healthy, happy, successful and productive students.
The department is committed to creating quality learning opportunities for children and young people. These opportunities support wellbeing through positive and respectful relationships and fostering a sense of belonging to the school and community.
The Wellbeing Framework for Schools helps schools support the cognitive, physical, social, emotional and spiritual development of students and allows them to connect, succeed and thrive throughout their education.
How we support student wellbeing
At The Meadows, we promote student wellbeing through a range of strategies and programs, including:
- A whole-school approach where teachers help students feel welcome, included, and connected. Student wellbeing and a strong sense of belonging are prioritised in every classroom.
- Programs that support attendance, including Breakfast Club, incentive programs, Check-In/Check-Out systems, and mentoring programs.
- Clear expectations for behaviour and respectful relationships taught through Positive Behaviour for Learning (PBL), embedded in our school values of being safe and responsible learners.
- Huey Heroes reward system, which focuses on our values and explicitly teaches and reinforces expected behaviours.
- Meadows Mates social skills program, supporting students to develop positive peer relationships.
- Student leadership and student voice opportunities, strengthening engagement, agency, and belonging.
- Individual health care plans developed for students who require medical support.
- Strong partnerships with families and community services to ensure holistic support for every child.
- Extensive transition programs for students starting school, changing grades or teachers, or moving to high school.
- Access to school counsellors, school psychologists and specialist staff to support wellbeing and learning needs.
- Open and ongoing communication between students, staff, and families regarding wellbeing and support.
Through these initiatives, and by using a trauma-informed lens in our daily practices, we aim to nurture healthy, happy, and successful learners who are active, positive contributors to our school and community.
Positive Behaviour for Learning
At our school, we use Positive Behaviour for Learning (PBL) - a whole-school approach for creating a positive, safe and supportive school climate where students can learn and develop. Our whole school community works together to establish expected behaviours and teach them to all students.
We encourage all students to:
- Be safe
- Be responsible
- Be a learner
